Dimensions

How Big is Your Classroom?

Dimensions of the Classroom

You will need: paper and pencils, measuring tapes

Your task is to map the physical parameters of the classroom.

1. Measure the length, width, and height of the classroom. Calculate its volume.

2. Draw a scale floor plan of the classroom, indicating locations of windows, doors, heating/air conditioning vents, furniture, plants, and anything else visible in the room. How many square feet of wall are devoted to windows? (What fraction of the total wall space is this?)

3. What type(s) of light fixtures are used? How many hours/day are they used? How many kilowatt hours of electricity are consumed lighting your classroom? How much does this cost the school system?
